the girl of the golden west . visual design by scott otto anderson

OPERA AUSTRALIA
Scott has just completed the video component for a vast Puccini opera The Girl of the Golden West, which opens at the Sydney Opera House tonight. Though one of his lesser known works, Puccini felt that this epic opera, set in the goldmining wild west of America, was his finest. Opera director Nigel Jamieson asked Anderson to make his vision come to life turning the opera into a cinematic homage to black and white film and spaghetti westerns. Anderson's video 'trailer' for the overture opens the opera and his video is present throughout the show using front and rear video projections across the walls, ceiling, floor and furniture to transform the set, befitting the onstage melodrama whilst also playing with tricks of forced perspective and illusion.

The Girl of the Golden West runs at the Sydney Opera House from July 14th to the 6th August.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

a foreign light becomes freedom in flight . video art by husein alicajic

Creative Sydney, VIVID festival
This unique project saw Husein Alicajic join indie supergroup Parades, performer Flutter Lyon, THE NOISE string quartet, and new media artist Harriet Birks in a unique performance event at the Museum of Contemporary Art for Creative Sydney / Vivid festival 2010.

The conceptual basis of this collaboration 'A Foreign Light Becomes Freedom In Flight' explored the contrasts between foreign and familiar - notions defined only by knowledge and perception level. The film made by Husein specially for the evening, featuring high-contrast, mesmerising experimental footage, was projected large scale throughout the live performances by the musicians, with real-time audio interactive effects and live mixing by Birks.
SPECIAL PROJECTS

the riot act . a performance at campbelltown art centre directed by karen therese . video art by scott otto anderson

projection excerpt
Inspired by newspaper headlines that followed three highly publicised riots in NSW, Bidwell, Redfern and Macquarie Fields, The Riot Act is a poetic investigation into forces, perspectives and opinions that shape communities that experience social unrest.

The video component for the show was very large, ultimately requiring four live cameras, five projectors – two data projectors, two miniature-handheld projectors and a giant 14m wide cinemascope back wall projection – as well as an on-stage TV with both live & pre-recorded content.

Kevin Jackson's (NIDA) review commented that Scott's video art  “is of great, of both, realistic and poetic impulse and impact. Some of it breathtaking in its aptness and heartrending in its placement in the work.”
